Episode 6: Episode 6

Summary

The growing success of the smelting company and Ross's successful bid for copper at auction only serve to anger George more than ever before, while Francis is increasingly volatile now he has lost his mine and is reduced to working the land. Ross and Zacky discover there is a fever at Bodmin Jail just weeks before Jim is due to be released, so Ross embarks on a desperate course of action to save his friend - making things awkward when he is later invited to a grand ball, where in his frustration he gets fighting drunk, leaving Demelza to fend for herself

Review

Alison Graham

Tonight’s Turner Prize goes to a half-naked Ross Poldark in a gratuitous beach-front blouson-burning moment. Come on, what else is a man to do, he’s just visited a friend and estate worker in fetid, typhoid-ridden Bodmin Gaol, he’s incinerating his shirt as an impotent act of class warfare. Probably.

As another blood-orange sun races across the Cornish sky, Ross (Aidan Turner) fumes at the injustice of Life in General. His former estate worker Jim is incarcerated for wanting to feed his family, there are riots across the county and Ross and Demelza are invited to a ball that is of insufferably smug painted ladies and complacent men.

So a drunken Ross has a meltdown on the dance floor as the horrid judge who sentenced Jim (Ross of old, Robin Ellis) once more lurches into his sight. Meanwhile Ross’s presentable pal, the mine’s doctor, is the centre of village gossip after he becomes the object of the local strumpet’s affections.
