As befits a show in which the characters value consistency and reliability above all other qualities, Christopher Storer’s restaurant drama is back, as regular as clockwork, a year after a tumultuous fourth season.

The question now is whether Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), the frustrated lieutenant who has always looked like a calm and decisive leader in waiting, can step up and run a kitchen herself, as she and we have always thought she can.

The fifth and final season takes its time to get into gear, building suspense via the unsubtle but effective metaphor of a rainstorm brewing over Chicago – as the restaurant’s plumbing comes under just as much strain as its exhausted staff and exasperated financiers, Storer riffs elliptically on his favoured themes.

It’s a show about family, both biological and chosen – while the cheffing team continue to support and infuriate each other, Jamie Lee Curtis puts in the odd appearance as psychologically unstable matriarch, Donna – but this year we’re more concerned with the hopes and ambitions of each character. Ultimately The Bear is about people pushing themselves to achieve something worthwhile, constantly asking themselves: what do I want to do with my life, and am I capable of achieving it? Even if it’s something as ephemeral as placing sauce perfectly on a plate, that’s pure drama.
