Perhaps the most consequential American election in living memory could see either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump crowned overnight, although given the knife-edge nature of the polls in such battleground states as Nevada and Pennsylvania, and the likelihood of extensive legal challenges, it may be best not to anticipate anything conclusive.
However, in the event of sleepless nights for those concerned about the future of western democracy, four channels (to say nothing of CNN et al) will be there for you. Caitríona Perry and Sumi Somaskanda will anchor events for the BBC alongside Clive Myrie, deploying fact-checkers (doubtless to the point of exhaustion) and pulling in reaction from correspondents around the world.
ITV1’s coverage will be led by Tom Bradby and a team of experts, while Mark Austin does the night shift for Sky News, aided by Yalda Hakim, Mark Stone and Lewis Goodall. If you’re voting Channel 4, expect to see Emily Maitlis and Krishnan Guru-Murthy in the hot seats, with Jeremy Vine and Matt Frei trying to make sense of it all as the world holds its breath.
