Review

Jack Seale

Something’s not quite right with this drama: anything with Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington in it ought to be terrific, but there’s a strangely ponderous tone to the story of three friends who, having been close for decades, discover they don’t know each other as well as they thought they did when one of them, Nancy (Kate Mara), is killed.

Based on Araminta Hall’s novel, its glamorous secrets and lies may well become addictive, but the opening double bill is a chewy, melodramatic slog, and the lead performers both look like they’ve been miscast into roles they’re not sure how to play. It’s by Annie Weisman, creator of the knife-sharp comedy Physical, but unfortunately you’d never guess.
