This is seriously weird in a Wicker Man sort of way.

We first see Sam (Jude Law) shouting hysterically into his mobile about 40 grand that’s gone missing. Minutes later he stumbles upon a suicidal teenager who he kindly drives back to where she lives on the island of Osea. Here the residents are “all good people of God”, according to the creepy pub landlord (Paddy Considine), yet there’s a constant undercurrent of violence and they have some very strange traditions (one involves salt and soil, another an inverted sign of the cross) that they’re determined to protect. And who is the little boy in the red shorts that Sam keeps glimpsing? Every fibre of your being will be screaming “Get out of there!” Unfortunately, Sam is stranded on this nightmare of an island.

The Third Day is a psychological thriller with a good cast (including Emily Watson) and three separate but connected stories (summer, autumn and winter) that touch on the themes of loss and isolation. It’s also extremely disturbing.
