The Worst Betrayal

Summary

A boxing champion who was forced into hiding then betrayed by a former Olympic teammate

Review

David McGillivray

This is the series — from BBC Sounds — that told us about the Washington Generals, who have lost 17,000 times to the Harlem Globetrotters, and about Brazilian striker Evaristo, who held a goalscoring record that Pele never matched.

Today’s story is about Dutch boxer Barend “Ben” Bril (1912—2003), who proudly wore the Star of David on his trunks. When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, Bril was forced into hiding. Betrayed by former team-mates, he was deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where 50,000 died, but even here he wouldn’t conform.

Bril’s story inspired a Dutch kickboxer, also Jewish, to make his mark. Barry Groenteman now runs a gym near Amsterdam.
