NYO at the Proms
Summary
Petroc Trelawny presents from the Royal Albert Hall as Thomas Adès conducts the National Youth Orchestra on a musical journey to the underworld and back. The programme opens with Liszt's Mephisto Waltz No 1, a whirlwind score based on Nikolaus Lenau's epic poem Faust, followed by Adès' own Dante - Part 2: Purgatorio, the central act of his Grammy Award-winning ballet. To round off the concert, the orchestra delivers the dazzling Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz. Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No 1. Thomas Adès: Dante - Part 2: Purgatorio. Berlioz Symphonie fantastique. National Youth Orchestra, Thomas Adès (conductor)

The Proms’ main man Petroc Trelawny is our guiding light as dark forces are unleashed in the Albert Hall. Does the Devil really have all the best tunes? This is what the National Youth Orchestra – more than 150 of the UK’s finest teenage musicians – intend to explore in a fiendish programme conceived by conductor/composer Thomas Adès.
To start, there’s the dancing whirlwind of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No 1. Next, and new to the Proms, is Adès’s own Purgatorio, the second part of his ballet Dante. (Fellow conductor Gustavo Dudamel’s recording of it won a Grammy in 2024.) To close, brace yourselves for 50 minutes of phantasmagoria, courtesy of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique
