The appeal of the Addamses lies in them being the textbook American family as seen through a cracked mirror, in that their revelling in the macabre gels them together while alienating everyone else. So, to pack Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) off to an emo Hogwarts where oddness is commonplace feels like a risk. Thankfully, the daughter of Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is soon revealed to be far more kooky, spooky and altogether ooky than her contemporaries.
And in this stylish, coming-of-age supernatural dramedy, she also has a labyrinthine mystery to solve — one that may well tie into her parents’ own history at this strange, secretive boarding school. As you’d expect, director Tim Burton is the perfect fit, as he gets to indulge his love of the gothic. But Danny Elfman’s score is a further highlight, as is Ortega who is delightfully po-faced as the pig-tailed series lead.
