Episode 1: Paris
Summary
Comedian Sue Perkins embarks on an adventure along the route of the Orient Express, tracing the path through the heart of Europe, exploring vibrant cultures and stunning landscapes, and meeting the people who give each city its unique identity. After narrowly missing the train in Paris, Sue samples gourmet insects crafted by a world-class chef; gets a little tipsy on absinthe; and finds her place as a catwalk model in Paris Fashion Week before ending her time in the city with a night at the Crazy Horse Cabaret
Review
Jane Rackham
She could be lounging in a luxurious Orient Express train carriage, sipping champagne and watching countries go by, but that’s not Sue Perkins’s style. Instead, she’s visiting all the major cities along its route from Paris to Istanbul, having offbeat, occasionally downright wacky, experiences along the way.
In Paris she goes on a late-night bike ride, learns about being a model and visits a gourmet insect restaurant. While she does brilliant Jay Rayner and Gregg Wallace impressions there, her cooking isn’t MasterChef quality. I’m not sure she’s got a future as a cabaret dancer at the Crazy Horse, either.
It’s fun (and funny) but those who remember how tipsy she and Giles Coren would get while filming the Supersizers series might be worried when she develops a taste for absinthe.
