Not many dramas these days turn on a bombshell will-reading, but that’s the set-up here: Unforgotten creator Chris Lang takes us to a room in a country mansion, where a dysfunctional extended family are informed of their patriarch’s final wishes. The dead man is Jack (Trevor Eve), an abrasive multi-millionaire who is briefly glimpsed before he takes a bullet in the outhouse. News of what seems to be his suicide prompts the return home of his sons, their partners, a grandchild and Jack’s wives past and present.
They’re largely clichés, but ones who will probably still fascinate thanks to Lang’s deft dialogue and some top-class performers, from Daniel Rigby as the weak heir who isn’t cut out for running the family business, to John Simm as a mad-for-it record producer. Future versions of the clan appear in flashforwards, cutely staged as documentary interviews.
