Stephen Graham continues to cement himself as one of the most authentic and compelling voices in television with this tragic and depressingly pertinent drama. Written and created by Graham and Jack Thorne, the series is directed by Philip Barantini, with whom the actor previously collaborated on Boiling Point. And just like the film and BBC series, this manages to pull off the same sublime device of filming each episode in a continuous real-time scene.

Ambitious, unrelenting and phenomenally choreographed, it adds an intensity and claustrophobia to the story of Jamie (newcomer Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old who’s arrested on suspicion of murdering a classmate. Before he’s interviewed by police (Ashley Walters and Faye Marsay, both excellent), he emphatically tells dad Eddie (Graham) that he’s innocent. But what’s the truth?
