Review

Jane Rackham

Dan Snow fulfils a childhood dream of his when he “follows in the wake” of Odysseus, the Greek hero of Homer’s epic tale who sailed home to the island of Ithaca after 10 years fighting a war in the city of Troy. While the story may be a legend, the places mentioned are real, so Dan visits Troy, Ithaca and the ancient city of Mycenae, retelling the stories of vengeful gods, nymphs and evil monsters.

It’s the subject of a new film by Christopher Nolan, but this documentary is considerably less action-packed, although Dan does lash himself to the mast of his yacht to resist the enchanting melodies of the sirens. Like Odysseus, he manages to survive the ordeal.
