Episode 11: Heaven Sent

Summary

Part one of two. The Doctor faces the greatest challenge of his many lives when he is trapped, alone, in a world unlike any he has ever seen. As he navigates the twisting, ever-changing corridors of a mysterious castle, he is pursued by a fearsome, implacable creature known only as the Veil, drawn from his own childhood terrors and demanding to know his darkest secret. Peter Capaldi takes centre-stage in what is effectively a one-man episode for the first half of the series finale

Review

Patrick Mulkern

“I’ve just watched my best friend die. My day can’t get any worse.” Oh dear, Doctor, if only you knew… The Time Lord is for once very alone, trapped inside a rotating mechanical castle, tested to the limits by a puzzle box of nightmares. He’s stalked by a veiled ghoul and, with Clara dead, there’s no one to help him or rein him in.

Not only is this an extended episode, nearly an hour long, it’s also a one-man tour de force from the marvellous Peter Capaldi. Only two other people appear, fleetingly. He’s made the role his own this year, as his cranky Doctor has become more lovable; now he shines with no one else to play off. (Tom Baker would have killed for this material.)

Steven Moffat imbues Heaven Sent with his hallmark intricacies and dares to tamper with Doctor Who lore, while Rachel Talalay (who directed last year’s finale) steeps it in atmosphere and sustains the momentum right until the final revelations.
