Summary

The crime drama about the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery is back, inspired by some of the theories around what happened to the rest of the £26 million gold bullion heist never recovered by police. The police chase the other half of the stolen gold when it resurfaces. In Tenerife, John Palmer's successful timeshare business starts to attract unwanted attention

The Brink’s-Mat case — the largest robbery in history — wasn’t so much closed but left ajar at the end of the first series of this cat-and-mouse factual drama. It had dawned on police officers Brian Boyce (Hugh Bonneville), Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) and Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer) that they had been going after half the gold — and that was only half of the story.

Creator and writer Neil Forsyth pens his dramatisation of what unfolded next, which includes a stash of secreted bullion that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase gold mine, and John Palmer (Tom Cullen), who’s been found selling time shares in Tenerife under his company El Dorado. That’s when he’s not darting around the town’s banks and police stations dropping off suspiciously stuffed brown envelopes, anyway.

This time round, the cast may not be as glitzy (Dominic Cooper and Jack Lowden aren’t back), yet the characters are just as colourful. In particular, Stephen Campbell Moore as rogue officer Tony Lundy and Joshua McGuire as money launderer supremo Douglas Baxter both add polish and prove excellent value. Continues on Tuesday.

Surprise! If you haven’t caught up with last night’s episode — and specifically, the final five minutes of last night’s episode — look away now…

Kenneth Noye is out of prison, which means Jack Lowden has found time, in between filming the next series of Slow Horses and confirming his role as Mr Darcy in Netflix’s forthcoming Pride and Prejudice adaptation, to return as the convicted criminal.

John (Tom Cullen) is suspicious about Kenny’s reappearance. His comeback only serves to turn the screws on John, whose wiliness is starting to run out of steam. Losing focus and with panic creeping in, he may find that any rash decisions made now could prove his undoing…
