Don’t let the furious, impenetrable opening 10 minutes and its thundering Fleetwood Mac song, Tusk, put you off, because The Americans eventually turns into an alluring adult drama.
Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell are all-American couple Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings. They live with their two kids in comfortable, white picket-fenced Washington suburbia and do nice things like take home-made brownies to their new neighbours. But Phillip and Elizabeth’s is an arranged marriage and they are living a lie. The couple are KGB spies, a deeply embedded sleeper cell in 1981 America, and they have a defector bound and gagged in their car boot.
