Fictional crime-solving clubs have become something of a phenomenon recently, but the genesis of this one is a story in itself. Death in Paradise creator Robert Thorogood pitched The Marlow Murder Club as a TV series in 2015, but failed, and ended up writing it as a novel — only to find that Richard Osman also had a book in the works with a similar-sounding title. But this is a genre replete with twists — and Thorogood’s plucky amateur detectives have now made it to the screen first.
Fans of both authors will no doubt come away thinking that Samantha Bond (who stars as retired archaeologist and keen crossword-solver Judith) could easily have featured in the Osman project being made by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. But vicar’s wife Becks (Cara Horgan) and dog-walker Suzie (Jo Martin) are novel enough sidekicks, and the historic Buckinghamshire town that becomes a scene of picturesque slaughter feels like an additional character in its own right.
