Review

David Butcher

This true-crime tale is an unorthodox one. As directed by Will Sharpe, Landscapers adds a layer of comic weirdness to the already strange story of Susan and Christopher Edwards, a mild-mannered middle-aged couple convicted in 2014 of murdering Susan’s parents 16 years earlier.

When we meet them, Susan and Christopher (Olivia Colman and David Thewlis) have fled to France and are living in a dilapidated flat, on their uppers. He is anxious and drawn; she is naively cheerful, indulging her passion for movie memorabilia. We sense the line between reality and fantasy is a hazy one for Susan — and the storytelling treads that line, too, interweaving clips from High Noon and playful flourishes like characters speaking emails to camera.

It’s whimsical (and sometimes loosely paced), but it creates a mesmerising mood within which Colman and Thewlis do good work. For light relief, there are some very funny Nottingham cops.
