Review

Jane Rackham

Oh, I didn’t see you there.” It’s what Rhiannon (Ella Purnell) hears constantly because everyone ignores her. It’s as if she’s invisible. From the girl at the supermarket check-out to her boss Norman (Jeremy Swift) at the local newspaper, who patronisingly refers to her as “sweetpea” because he can’t remember her name, they treat her as if she’s a ghost. Even her sister doesn’t return her calls. But it was the ridicule of school bully Julia (Nicôle Lecky) that literally made Rhiannon pull her hair out.

While she does secretly make lists of people she’d like to kill, Rhiannon has always accepted being overlooked. She couldn’t be more of a doormat if she had “welcome” stamped on her forehead.

Misery, slights and insults are piled high in the first episode of this deliciously twisted comedy drama, based on CJ Skuse’s novel about Rhiannon’s “coming-of-rage” — until she snaps, screaming, demonically triumphant, “Do you see me now?” You’ll be cheering her on all the way.
