Matt Smith tends to bring a roguish twinkle to whichever role he plays, but it’s more of a shark’s-eye glint here as he takes on the lead in a drama based on a book by the singer Nick Cave. Set in Cave’s adopted home of Brighton, it follows Bunny (Smith), a cosmetics salesman whose fierce appetite for women isn’t slowed by the presence of his wife and son at home in their murky flat. When his wife takes her own life, Bunny becomes a single parent with his own unique approach to raising a young man.

With flashbacks adding to the narrative’s dreamlike quality, the tone of the piece — a sort of grim hedonism, laced with uncomfortable but cathartic honesty — will not be to everyone’s taste, and it’s never too far from impenetrable. But Smith’s pastiche of an irredeemable philanderer is irresistible, and, underneath all the swearing, casual cruelty and cheap sex, there’s a story in there about a broken soul trying to find his way through a black cloud of grief.
