Guardian of the Night
Summary
The personal mission of Dani Robertson, the UK's first dark sky officer, to reduce light pollution in Eryri (Snowdonia) and raise awareness of its impact. Wales has the highest percentage of protected dark skies anywhere in the world yet, despite this, artificial lighting continues to worsen each year, with 98 per cent of the UK population now living under light-polluted skies
Review
Johnathon Hughes
Dani Robertson admits she’s had some terrible jobs in the past, but her current role as a dark sky officer is definitely her favourite — and certainly the most unusual. Robertson is the first person in the UK, and possibly the world, to have such a role, which entails combating light pollution to protect the night skies. The scale of the impact light pollution has on the wellbeing of humans and wildlife is astonishing, yet it’s something not many people are aware of. You could even say they’re in the dark about it.
Working with governments and environmental groups to preserve natural night light, Robertson spreads the word from her North Wales base about how artificial light is as dangerous a planet pollutant as plastic. As this intriguing documentary illustrates, there are conscientious ways to use light while still protecting darkness.
