After James Gunn launched his shiny new DC Universe with Superman last year, fans are now set to be treated to the second outing in the rebooted franchise – with Milly Alcock's Supergirl taking centre stage this time around.

The character – also known as Kara Zor-El – made a brief cameo appearance at the end of the aforementioned Superman movie as she popped by her uncle's place to collect her pet Krypto the Super Dog, whom he had been looking after while she was on an interplanetary jaunt.
And the new film will begin with Kara and her powerful pooch heading off in celebration of the former's 23rd birthday, only for things to take a turn when she meets a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll who is intent on avenging her father's death.
While the full review embargo has not yet lifted for the film, the first reactions on social media have been a little muted overall, despite widespread praise for Alcock's central performance.

Supergirl release date
Supergirl will be released in cinemas on Thursday 25 June 2026.
As mentioned above, the project is the second theatrically released feature film from the reorganised DC Studios, which now has Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad mastermind James Gunn as its co-CEO.
It follows this summer's Superman, which opened to strong reviews and solid box office in July, featuring a short cameo appearance from Alcock's Supergirl in the closing minutes – thus setting the stage for this next chapter.
Supergirl was originally announced with the subtitle Woman of Tomorrow, but Gunn revealed to Rolling Stone in June 2025 that the title had been simplified, mirroring his dropping of 'Legacy' from the title of his Superman reboot.
"I'm always cutting," he summed up.

On giving the green light, Gunn told Brazilian pop culture website Omelete.com: "I didn't necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director.
"We're going to do this movie after Superman because it was the best option. Other movies have been written, but they haven't been as good as this one. So we're going to keep going with that."
Supergirl commenced filming in January 2025, with Gunn sharing an image from the set (above) that showed Alcock sat in a chair with her character's logo printed on it, looking out towards a futuristic, neon-lit environment.
Gunn confirmed in mid-May that shooting had wrapped.
Supergirl cast: Every confirmed actor
House of the Dragon and Sirens star Milly Alcock leads the cast of Supergirl as Kara Zor-El, who debuted in a brief cameo appearance in last year's Superman reboot.
Posting on Instagram about her casting, Gunn said: "Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU.
"Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by [comic book creators] Tom King, Bilquis Evely and [screenwriter] Ana Nogueira."
Here's an overview of the full confirmed Supergirl cast – read on for more details on their roles and how they came to be involved.
In December 2024, Jason Momoa announced that he would be appearing in Supergirl, but would not be reprising the role of Arthur Curry (aka Aquaman) from the now-defunct prior DC universe.
Instead, he will debut as intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo; a character he has been connected to for some time, known for his brash personality, violent brawls and a space-faring motorcycle that matches his biker gang-inspired costume.

In one of several hints that he'd be playing Lobo in Gunn's reimagined DC Universe, Momoa attended the premiere of The Bikeriders last year, sporting a black-and-white t-shirt that matches the skin tone of the extraterrestrial Lobo (see above).
Momoa said (via Instagram): "So Lobo was... I collect comics, and I don't do so much anymore, but he was always my favourite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I'm like, 'Hello? It's the perfect role'."
Midway through shooting on Supergirl, producer Gunn shared on social media that Momoa was one of the first actors he spoke to after being formally announced as DC Studios boss, adding that he's "loved watching Jason bring him to life".

Previously, Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts had been cast as Supergirl's principle villain: the sword-wielding, magic-using space pirate known as Krem of the Yellow Hills (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Viewers may know Schoenaerts for his roles in Red Sparrow, The Old Guard and HBO's The Regime (below).
In January 2025, David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) and Emily Beecham (The Pursuit of Love) were announced to be playing Supergirl's parents in the film, with THR also getting that exclusive scoop.
Finally, 3 Body Problem star Eve Ridley has joined the film as Ruthye Mary Knoll; an orphaned alien girl protected by Supergirl, after her father is killed by the villainous Krem.

We can also expect another appearance from the mischievous Krypto too, considering that Kara collected her badly behaved pooch after his pivotal role in Superman's clash with Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).
Meanwhile, Corenswet's Superman has also been confirmed for a role in the film, albeit a far less central one than he had in his own film.
Director Craig Gillespie is helming the upcoming blockbuster, with his past credits being Margot Robbie's I, Tonya, Emma Stone's Cruella and factual drama miniseries Pam & Tommy.
Supergirl plot explained
Supergirl will be based on a recent comic book series titled Woman of Tomorrow, which began with a listless Kara Zor-El finding purpose when she is approached by a young orphan from a destroyed planet.
Together, they travel the universe in an attempt to track down the evil-doers who caused the tragedy – led by space pirate Krem of the Yellow Hills – which proves to be a powerful journey that shakes both to their core.
"When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice," the official plot synopsis reads.
"We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life," said Gunn previously.
"She is much more hardcore and not the Supergirl we're used to."
Fans previously caught a glimpse of the character's immense power in 2023's The Flash, which took place in the since-retired DCEU continuity and saw relative unknown Sasha Calle in the role.
Is there a Supergirl trailer?
Yes – there have been several. Check out one below to get a taste of what to expect.
An earlier trailer for the upcoming film was released during Super Bowl 2026, giving fans a glimpse into Kara Zor-El’s life back when her home planet of Krypton was still thriving, while also showing the character clashing with enemies and meeting Krypto the Superdog for the first time.
Speaking of Superman she says: "He sees the good in everyone. And I see the truth."
