That's especially the case when it's a summer blockbuster that sees him returning to one of his favourite topics, as is the case with his new film Disclosure Day.

As with his classics Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, the new film is concerned with UFO visits to Earth – following a whistle blower and weather presenter who are brought together as they plan to expose a vast government cover-up.

Josh O'Connor and Emily Blunt play the two lead roles, joined in the cast by an impressive ensemble that also includes Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson and Wyatt Russell.

Intrigued and wondering how you can watch the film? Read on for everything you need to know.

How to watch Disclosure Day – is it streaming?

No – given Spielberg is one of the most cinematic directors of all time, it's no surprise that the film has been given an exclusive theatrical run and will not be immediately available on streaming.

It was released in the UK on Wednesday 10 June and is playing in all major cinemas around the country – so there should be no shortage of options for you if you want to see it imminently.

When will Disclosure Day be released on streaming?

Of course, once the theatrical window has run it's course, the film will eventually be available to watch at home – first of all to rent or buy on Premium Video on Demand platforms and then possibly on a subscription streaming service.

At time of writing, no official word has been revealed as to exactly when the digital release date might be. However, we'd expect that – at the very least – the film will have a 45 day exclusive theatrical run.

With that in mind, the very earliest we'd imagine it might start popping up on digital platforms is late July, although it could yet be later than that. We'll be keeping an eye out for any official updates.

Disclosure Day cast – who stars in Steven Spielberg's new film?

As mentioned above, the main roles in the film are played by British stars Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor, while there is also a starry supporting cast containing many household names.

Colin Firth stars as the primary antagonist Noah Scanlon, Colman Domingo is Hugo Wakefield – an ally of O'Connor's whistleblower character – and Wyatt Russell and Eve Hewson play the respective romantic partners of the two leads.

Disclosure Day plot – what is Steven Spielberg's new film about?

The film follows whistleblower Daniel Kellner in his attempt to expose the truth about alien visits to Earth – after he steals evidence of a cover-up from his old employer, the shady Warded Corporation.

Eventually, he teams up with weather presenter Margaret Fairchild, who begins behaving very curiously after an encounter with a red cardinal bird and is mysteriously drawn towards him.

The official synopsis reads: "As a massive government conspiracy unravels, a targeted whistleblower races against time to bring about the extraordinary event that will change human history forever: the day of ultimate alien disclosure."
