There was once a time when we knew a whole host of the movies that were upcoming within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but currently the widely-known slate is surprisingly slim.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are currently the only films in the franchise with confirmed release dates, while the likes of Black Panther 3, Shang-Chi 2 and an X-Men reboot film are reportedly in development.
Now, a new addition has been added to that list, with Loki showrunner and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron reportedly in the early stages of development on a Nova movie.
Deadline has reported that Waldron is on board to write the script, and could also direct the film if it moves forward. Marvel Studios and representatives for Waldron could not be reached when approached for comment by Deadline.

Previously, a series centred on Nova was in the works, with Sabir Pirzada (Moon Knight) writing it during development back in March 2022.
In July 2024, plans were still in motion, with Ed Bernero (Criminal Minds) being hired as writer and showrunner in December 2024. The series was put on pause in February 2025, with this movie now filling its place.
But just who is Nova and what do you need to know about the character from the comics? Read on to find out.
Who is Nova?
If you're not a comics reader but recognise the name Nova, it is likely from Guardians of the Galaxy, which introduced the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police force.
In the comics, Richard Rider, AKA Nova, is a member of the Nova Corps, who first appeared in a 1976 issue of Super Adventures.
He was first introduced as a New York high school student, who was chosen by the last surviving member of the Nova Corps, Rhomann Dey (played by John C Reilly in Guardians of the Galaxy) to replace him, as he was dying. He was given the uniform and powers of a Nova Centurion, including enhanced strength, flight and resistance to injury.

Across the years, he has had battles with the Skrulls, who have appeared in Marvel projects including Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Secret Invasion.
For a brief time, fans believed that Nova made a cameo appearance in the background of Avengers: Endgame's final battle. This was due to a comment made by director Joe Russo, although he later clarified that he was making a joke.
