The movie, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is coming to cinemas on 20 November 2026, is a work of autobiographical fiction based on the experiences writer-director Beth de Araújo had as a child.
The film follows the conflict between two parents (played by Chan and Tatum) after their 8-year-old daughter Josephine (played by newcomer Mason Reeves) witnesses a brutal crime. As a court case hinges on her testimony, the parents must weigh up whether they should allow their daughter to take the stand.
The footage gives viewers a first look at their dilemma, as well as some of the hardships Josephine herself is up against as one grown-up asks her: "If what you say you saw was so bad, why did you just watch from behind a tree?"

Speaking about the movie, Araújo previously revealed it's been a long road to getting it made.
"I’ve been trying for 12 years [to get Josephine made]," she said at the Berlinale press conference for Josephine earlier this year (via The Hollywood Reporter).
She continued: "This was supposed to be my first feature. I was at the Sundance directors lab with it. However, given the subject matter, it was incredibly challenging to piece together.

"And Gemma was attached to it then, and then I shot Soft & Quiet (2023) and I was lucky enough to then meet this wonderful human [points to Tatum] who signed on, and then we could go make the movie. So that’s why it took 12 years."
The film is produced by Araújo, Tatum, Chan, David Kaplan, Josh Peters, Marina Stabile and Mark H Rapaport, while Crystine Zhang, Emanuel Nuñez and Rapaport serve as executive producers.
