The Inbetweeners reunion film has taken another major step forward, with the hotly anticipated project reportedly heading straight to Netflix.

Variety reports that, although contracts are still to be signed, original cast members Simon Bird (Will), Joe Thomas (Simon), Blake Harrison (Neil) and James Buckley (Jay) are in advanced talks to return.

Long-circulating rumours of a reunion finally began taking shape last year, when production company Banijay UK struck a deal with series creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley.

Then said to "pave the way" for the return of the show, it was initially unclear precisely what a revival of The Inbetweeners would look like.

Now though, that picture is coming into clearer view as a third movie intended to bring back the beloved original characters, revealing what became of them after their infamously awkward teenage years.

Netflix has a history of snapping up popular British TV brands, having recently brought back BBC dramas Peaky Blinders and Luther for sequel films The Immortal Man and Fallen Sun, respectively.

Meanwhile, one of the streamer's earliest forays into original content was a revival of cult favourite US sitcom Arrested Development, which it handed two additional seasons.

Still, the migration from cinemas to the small screen is something of a surprise for The Inbetweeners, given the past box office dominance of its first two films, which collectively grossed more than $150 million worldwide.

That this reunion is happening at all is a turn up for the books, with co-stars Bird and Buckley previously talking down the possibility in no uncertain terms.

"I can tell you emphatically that there are no prospects of a reunion," said Bird in September 2024. A year earlier, he described the idea as "sad and creepy".

Buckley echoed, in a 2023 interview with Radio Times, that a revival would run the risk of being "pathetic". Previously, he'd told Chris Moyles on Radio X that there wasn't "enough money in the world" to compel him to play Jay again.

If any company can put that statement to the test, it would be Netflix.

The Inbetweeners is available to stream on Channel 4.
