Calum Baker
Stuffed with plot beats that could each sustain half an hour of storytelling, this Colombian crime saga hardly knows when to slow down. Set against the backdrop of a real-life petrol-smuggling crisis on the country's border with Venezuela in 2012, the story begins with three brothers being forced out of the smuggling business by a vicious local gang. But while eldest sibling Moisés (played by rock star Juanes) settles for a peaceful life, the heavily indebted Ulises (Alberto Guerra) joins the rival crew, while young romantic Juan (Alejandro Speitzer) tries to go independent with his girlfriend Diana (Laura Osma). It isn't long before Juan's decision has ramifications for him and his loved ones. There's a new twist every five minutes, and director/co-writer Andrés Baiz could have got away with this much plotting if he had used a punchier cinematic style. Unfortunately, while the cast is perfectly convincing and there are some good, tense sequences, the film often suffers from a flatness that highlights a broader lack of focus.
