Rosie Fletcher

Living below the line in a Glasgow high-rise, a mother imparts certain survival rules to her young daughter, in this poignant and subtle drama. These rules include trusting nobody, opening the door to no-one, and making no sound. Grace (Déborah Lukumuena) had Ama (Le'Shantey Bonsu) aged 14 and had no childhood of her own, so her personal trauma is passed down into their co-dependent relationship. When Ama makes friends with vibrant local girl Fiona (Liana Turner), the exhausted Grace struggles to cope. Adura Onashile's confident feature debut sparingly hints at Grace's past, while the small flat where they reside - complete with taped-up letter box and papered-over windows - serves as a prison as much as a safe haven. The film is slow to the point of sluggish, and might have benefited from a dash more plot. However, the performances are exceptional, nicely complementing the atmospheric visuals.
