Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

James Mottram

The multicoloured musical maestros return for this third - and sadly least engaging - film in the franchise. The story digs into the past of Branch (voiced by Justin Timberlake), the all-singing Troll who is now together with Poppy (Anna Kendrick). Branch and his older siblings once formed BroZone, Poppy's favourite boy band, until they split up. When one of his brothers (Troye Sivan) is captured by two wannabe pop stars, Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells), Branch must reunite with his siblings to form a rescue force. The script has some amusing lines, notably one speech cramming in myriad references to One Direction, NSYNC and other male-led pop groups. Co-directors Walt Dohrn and Tim Heitz also include some nice 2D animation scenes, and a surfeit of sing-along musical numbers entertain, with renditions of Candy Girl, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) and Stayin' Alive. Eclectic voice cast aside, though, this glitter-covered narrative is all sparkle and no substance.
