Michael Caine is at his most impressively impassive in this terrific, tough British thriller. He plays Jack Carter, a London gangster who goes north after his brother is murdered and discovers his teenage niece is involved in an adult-film racket. Director Mike Hodges keeps a firm hand on the surly proceeding, while cinematographer Wolfgang Suschitzky captures the fascinating Newcastle upon Tyne locations in all their grim glory. Coronation Street's Bryan Mosley and Minder's Glynn Edwards are among the lowlifes given memorably unpleasant send-offs, while playwright John Osborne brings a razor-slash presence to the role of a crime boss. This is sex and death with a British accent, and its impact remains undiminished.
