The influence of Bollywood is readily evident in this Indonesian drama from prolific director Anggy Umbara. Adapted from a novel by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, the storyline couldn't be more melodramatic, as newly qualified doctor Niyala (Beby Tsabina) is forced to become engaged to her childhood tormentor, Roger (Dito Darmawan), because her fisherman father is heavily indebted to his bigwig dad. But Niyala's friend Diah (Caitlin Halderman), who happens to be engaged to the classmate Niyala has long hoped to marry, knows a dreadful secret that casts a shadow over Roger's insistence that he's a changed man. Largely filmed in close-ups and two-shots, the action is very talk-bound and seemingly every scene ends with another soap-style twist. But the performances are solid, with the jilbab-clad Tsabina making a devoutly demure, but spirited heroine, who wants to do right by her family, while also helping to modernise their coastal village.
