Matt Glasby

Made one year before The Texas Chain Saw Massacre changed the genre, Marc B Ray's 1973 grindhouse horror belongs to another time. A delirious opening sequence sees young Matthew (JM Jones) running over his father, and then his own arm, with a tractor. Having spent the intervening years in a psychiatric hospital, the grown-up Matthew (Fred Holbert) returns home with a hook where his hand used to be, and finds that his mother (Leigh Mitchell) has married another man (Robert Knox). Tortured by incestuous feelings, Matthew kills them both and escapes to the city, where he meets a sex worker (also Mitchell) who reminds him of his mother - and the cycle of violence repeats. Scream Bloody Murder has gained a reputation as a proto-slasher over the years, but its threadbare production values and awkward performances make it hard to take seriously. While the film's rough charms might have worked at the drive-in, in any other environment it's just amateur hour incarnate.
