Hume Cronyn and Vincent Gardenia won Primetime Emmys for their performances in this wry but deeply poignant HBO saga, which is also known as Age-Old Friends. Marooned in a retirement home, Cronyn and Gardenia play chess and memory games to avoid drifting off to what they call "Zombieland". But, while Gardenia is physically strong, his mind has started to fail him, and the sharp-tongued Cronyn battles to keep him functioning between bouts of flirting with nurse Michele Scarabelli and testy exchanges with cleaner Esther Rolle and daughter Tandy Cronyn, who bears the brunt for her son's refusal to visit his adoring grandfather. George Cole and Geoffrey Bayldon had taken the roles in the West End production of the prize-winning play by Bob Larbey, who had previously scripted several classic sitcoms with John Esmonde. It's always tempting to open out stage scenarios, but director Allan Kroeker sagely recognises that the drama's strength lies in the dialogue and the rapport between the spikily compassionate Cronyn and Gardenia's slowly fading pal.
