A lonely trucker doing his regular long-distance run into Buenos Aires finds his life changing when he accepts a paying passenger in this character-driven road movie, winner of the Camera d'Or prize for the best first feature at Cannes in 2011. Gruff, taciturn Ruben (Germán de Silva) is initially not best pleased when he picks up Jacinta (Hebe Duarte) as arranged, because bringing her baby daughter along isn't part of the bargain. Gradually, however, in the course of the journey, barriers are broken down and perspectives changed as Pablo Giorgelli's modest yet affecting film shows how human connections can form in the most unexpected circumstances. Look elsewhere for surprise twists or florid melodrama, since the story unfolds at a steady pace with very little dialogue. There's such wisdom, though, in the way it cumulatively touches our hearts, and the performers seem to live out their roles in a way that almost goes beyond acting. Once it reels you in, this is absolutely captivating.
