This slight but mostly effective horror film reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who previously directed her in erotic thriller The Voyeurs. Sweeney stars as Sister Cecilia, a young American nun who is invited to join an exclusive convent in the Italian countryside where she is tasked with providing end-of-life care to elderly nuns. It doesn't take long before Cecila finds herself at the centre of a deeply sinister plot spearheaded by the shady Father Tedeschi, the nature of which is alluded to in the film's title. Immaculate's influences include Rosemary's Baby and the Italian giallo genre, which at times leaves it feeling a little derivative. The slightly underbaked script would have benefited from more of a build-up, and the film is too restrained for much of its run time. However, there are some terrific moments, none more so than the magnificently deranged climax, which is so well-executed, it makes the whole film worthwhile.
