Sebastian Stan stars in this whip-smart movie about identity and artistic creation. Heavily disguised under prosthetics, Stan plays Edward, a New Yorker with neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that has caused his face to be severely disfigured by tumours. When Edward receives a miracle drug cure, his tumours fall away. Now unrecognisable, he takes on a new guise, fooling everyone, including his aspiring playwright neighbour Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), as he builds a new life. With a nod to Charlie Kaufman films such as Synecdoche, New York, writer/director Aaron Schimberg creates a fascinating mix of body horror and social satire. The film goes even further into left field in its second half with the arrival of Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis in real life and here plays a nemesis to the reborn Edward. This is truly innovative film-making - with Stan giving one of his best performances, as a man who seems no happier without his disfigurement.
