Jeremy Aspinall

Home-invasion horror has now established itself as a distinctive subgenre all of its own, even though director Michael Haneke turned things on their head to chilling effect with 1997's Funny Games. Switchblade Romance, The Strangers, The Purge films and You're Next have all shown home is neither sweet nor safe, and this knockout shocker from Spanish director Miguel Angel Vivas is no exception. A disorienting, startling beginning gives way to a brief respite as a well-to-do couple and their daughter move into a luxurious new home. Then three masked men arrive and the family is intimidated, terrorised and brutalised over a disturbingly deadly evening. The story may not be new, but Vivas executes and escalates events with such style and technical smarts (split screen, long takes à la Hitchcock's Rope), and inserts such extreme twists and unexpected turns, you will be left gasping for breath by the gruelling end.
