Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star as a couple whose loved-up idyllic life turns sour in spectacular fashion, in a serviceable black comedy that lacks a killer edge. Ivy Rose's reputation as a celebrated chef is on the rise at the same time as hubby Theo's standing as a brilliant architect takes a nosedive, leading to role reversals in the family home, and ever-increasing friction fuelled by fame, wealth and ego. Battle lines are drawn, and the divorce wrangling escalates towards comic cruelty and slapstick-like violence, although neither lead really convinces as a malevolent force. Colman and Cumberbatch play far too close to their charming, likeable personalities from chat shows or awards ceremonies, lacking the palpable nastiness of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the 1989 adaptation of author Warren Adler's novel, The War of the Roses. Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon weigh in as the couple's best friends, although the script gives them little opportunity to shine, so it's left to Allison Janney as Ivy's lawyer to step up as the story's only truly menacing presence.
