James Mottram

For the 13th film of his singular career, Christopher Nolan takes on no less a tale than Homer's foundational Ancient Greek poem of gods and monsters, and he delivers a spectacular cinematic epic for the ages. Recalling the director's earlier Dunkirk and Interstellar, with their themes of homecoming and hubris, the film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the warrior-king absent from his home of Ithaca for almost two decades after fighting in the Trojan War. Gradually, his story unfolds: both the brutal sacking of Troy and its protracted aftermath, as Odysseus and his crew face horrifying foes on their route home. Nolan admirably conveys the sweep of his hero's journey, shooting the entire film in IMAX (a first) with images that truly capture the grandeur of the exotic locales (Morocco, Iceland, Scotland). Led by Damon as the cunning but egocentric chieftain, the A-list cast (including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya) dovetails perfectly, while Nolan does well to cleverly ground the story's more fantastical elements. The sheer craft on display - costumes, score, art direction - defies belief, while there's a stark antiwar theme woven in that brings real emotional impact. A powerful, profound achievement.
