Summary

Black comedy horror drama. A sexually frustrated hospital orderly fathers a child who grows up to be one of the Soviet Bloc's most accomplished speed-eating champions. He attracts the romantic attention of another, equally corpulent contestant and the pair have a child. However, their offspring grows up to be the opposite of his parents - a skinny, morose taxidermist.

Having impressed with his experimental debut, Hukkle (2000), Hungarian director György Pálfi sought to outrage with his second feature. Following three members of one family across the generations, the action allegorically satirises the nation's socio-political shifts from the Arrow Cross era of the Second World War, through the Iron Curtain phase, and on to democratic decadence. It's hard to know where to look as wartime orderly Vendel Morosgoványi (Csaba Czene) cuckolds his lieutenant by seducing his portly wife in a porcine ménage that leaves an indelible impression. His son (Gergely Trócsányi) then hopes to represent his country as an Olympic speed-eater. However, he winds up a morbidly obese burden on his own heir (Marc Bischoff), who stuffs animals for a living before deciding to take the notion of self-preservation to its illogical conclusion. The first two tales were based on short stories by Lajos Parti Nagy, though Pálfi takes his own lovingly designed vision to unique extremes with a grotesque streak of humour and some good body horror. Surreal, scabrous, and scatological, this shockfest won't be for everyone. But the effects are hilariously outrageous.
