Summary
Festive romantic comedy starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. Abby and Harper have been happily dating for a year. With Christmas approaching, Abby plans to propose to Harper in front of her family - but her romantic intentions are thwarted when Abby discovers that Harper's conservative parents have no idea she is in a relationship with a woman.

The "coming home for Christmas" movie gets a much-needed makeover with this festive treat, in which a charismatic lesbian couple end up back in the closet for the holidays. Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis star as Abby and Harper, who are on their way to see Harper's uptight family when she reveals they don't know she's gay. Consequently, the lovers are forced to pose as roommates. Stewart expertly applies her slacker schtick to the humour and discomfort of the situation, and her romance with Davis results in some genuinely moving, beautifully played scenes. The superb cast also includes Mary Steenburgen as the family matriarch, with Dan Levy and Aubrey Plaza offering winning support from the wings. The script from writer/director Clea DuVall (best known as an actress on films such as The Faculty) is pretty heavy on contrivance, but that doesn't stop Happiest Season from putting a fresh spin on a familiar farce.
