Calum Baker

Fifty years after Louis Feuillade's silent Fantômas serial had revolutionised the crime film, the rights holders at Gaumont studios saw fit to produce this madcap and very 1960s reboot. It finds the titular master of disguise (Jean Marais, in a bizarre blue mask) wreaking havoc on Paris, having stolen the identity of journalist Jérôme Fandor (also Marais). Fandor, along with his girlfriend Hélène (Mylène Demongeot) and the bumbling Inspector Juve (Louis de Funès), must try and stop Fantomas - but the arch-villain is always one step ahead. Shot in bright Eastmancolor and luxurious widescreen, this is one of the era's many comical cash-ins on the James Bond phenomenon, complete with a nicely dressed secret lair that pays obvious tribute to Ken Adam's iconic 007 production design. Journeyman director André Hunebelle handles the gags and stunts with breezy flair, making the most of Marais's skill for physical work and smartly allowing de Funès - then on the brink of becoming France's biggest-ever box office star - several opportunities to steal the show with his indignant haplessness. It's slight, with an overly loose narrative, but made with some style and plenty of appealing silliness.
