Summary

A teenager at ballet school undergoes a traumatic transition from male to female while attending demanding dance classes as a girl in this Cannes award-winning drama from first-time director Lukas Dhont. Key to the film's absolute conviction is the remarkable central performance of Victor Polster, an androgynous presence (and male-born, male-identifying dance student in real life), who conveys palpable yearning for bodily transformation, while displaying the bloody feet and sheer determination involved in dancing en pointe. Billy Elliot had it easy by comparison, and yet for all the high stakes of its trans subject matter, this is an essentially familiar saga about an awkward adolescent who can't wait to be grown-up. Bolstered by Arieh Worthalter's engaging turn as the world's most understanding dad, its dramatic impact intensifies as Polster's embattled Lara nears crisis point. As such, Girl proves a truly ground-breaking piece of cinema, transforming the gender dilemmas of a young trans person into a living, breathing, heart-breaking emotional experience for a wide audience.
