Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Steve Morrissey

There's an almost comic irony at the heart of this story of a 16-year-old whose rebellion against his family leads him to take a job on a building site. Not only is Enzo (Eloy Pohu) hopeless at manual work but the casual homophobia of the other guys sits awkwardly with his own undeclared sexuality. Things become further complicated when Enzo falls in love with Vlad (Maksym Slivinskyi), a handsome Ukrainian who has taken Enzo under his wing. Where this puppy love will go is at the heart of this forlorn tale, which was to have been directed by Laurent Cantet, but was taken on by his long-time collaborator Robin Campillo (120 Beats per Minute) when Cantet died (though it remains billed as "un film de Laurent Cantet"). Both Pohu and Slivinskyi bring the goods in this tender drama that also obliquely addresses the war in Ukraine and Western Europe's response.
