Pitched halfway between Billy Elliot and Sunshine on Leith, this working-class romantic jukebox musical is a largely endearing tale of female love and friendship. Louise Brealey plays Helen, an unhappy chicken factory worker living in north Wales with her bullying ex and his partner while caring for his terminally ill mum (Sorcha Cusack). Yet Helen's lust for life reignites when a former crush (Annabel Scholey) returns to town after years away. Full of pluck and charm, writer/director Janis Pugh's underdog story offsets snapshots of workaday drudgery with flashes of escapist pleasure. Magic-mushroom high jinks, scattershot pop standards and fantasy sequences - messy chicken fight included - all help lift the mood. The loose plot and musical set pieces might have benefitted from more vigour and invention, but the film's warmly bawdy portrait of camaraderie among women feels persuasive, thanks to spot-on ensemble work and a winning lead. As the downtrodden but determined Helen, Brealey brings subtle notes of conviction to Pugh's broad but generous-spirited crowd-pleaser.
