British star Tom Hardy oozes gruff charisma in this stylish, absorbing chronicle of a 1960s Midwest biker gang, which is inspired by photographer Danny Lyon's 1967 account of a real-life Chicago outfit. Hardy plays Johnny, a family man and truck driver who founds the Vandals after watching Marlon Brando in The Wild One. Joining him is Benny (Elvis star Austin Butler), a true rebel without a cause, who soon attracts the attention of Kathy (Killing Eve's Jodie Comer). She is the film's narrator, who guides us through this violent world of bar brawls and bike meets. Hugely influenced by Martin Scorsese's GoodFellas, from its structural design to the jukebox, period-appropriate soundtrack, the film comes packed with star turns, including Boyd Holbrook, Damon Herriman and The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus - although Butler's magnetic wild man steals the picture. Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) traces the rise and fall of the Vandals with consummate skill, smartly capturing the anti-authoritarian feel of the era, and the result is cool, classy cinema.
