Terry Staunton

In this festive family comedy, Kiefer Sutherland plays a washed-up Hollywood action hero who is duped into starring in a regional English town's pantomime. Cast as Buttons in Cinderella, he has to contend with a misfit assortment of cast and stage crew (Rebel Wilson, Meera Syal, Jason Manford), while also trying to reconnect with a young daughter who's living with his Brit-based ex-wife and her new husband. The premise mirrors the American fish-out-of-water set-up of Ted Lasso, but without any of that TV show's wit or personality. There are six credited writers, but very few of their jokes land with any success - and too many rely on well-worn panto clichés. Sutherland has little in the way of comic timing, and is certainly no song-and-dance man, while supporting players (including Katherine Ryan and Danny Dyer) make only the lightest impression on proceedings. Still, the heart-warming last reel salvages a smidgen of dignity for Fisherman's Friends director Chris Foggin.
