Max Copeman

Writing and directing a film without his brother Joel for the first time, Ethan Coen is in a playful mood with this madcap cross between queer road movie and crime comedy. In 1990s Philadelphia, Jamie (Margaret Qualley) is kicked out by her girlfriend Sukie (Beanie Feldstein) after a string of infidelities. Joining her friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan) on a trip to Florida provides an ideal escape, and a chance to coax Marian out of her shell. However, hidden in their hire car is a briefcase that is key to a criminal plot involving a bunch of hapless characters played by Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon and Colman Domingo. Co-writing with his wife Tricia Cooke, Coen called the film a "lesbian B-movie", and his old-fashioned direction may not be to everyone's taste. But the bawdy humour and central couple lend a freewheeling and modern sensibility to 80 minutes of riotous fun, which will appeal to fans of Coen capers Burn After Reading and The Big Lebowski.
