A star rating of 2 out of 5.
Robert Sellers
Following his gross-out hit Re-Animator, Stuart Gordon reunited leads Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton in another HP Lovecraft-based splatter-fest. This sometimes crude clash of horror and sci-fi elements stars Combs as typically unhinged scientist Crawford Tillinghast, whose experiments with the Resonator spark off the usual orgy of murder and mutilation, turning him into a mutated creature with increasingly rubbery effect. This demented tale is sloppily directed, but once it gets going after a stalled start you can't fault its energy and audacity. Horror fans will delight in the scare-defusing moments of humour and stomach-churning effects.
