Terry Staunton

This survival drama based on a true story stars Woody Harrelson as the veteran leader of a deep-sea diving team frantically trying to save a novice member of his crew trapped in a malfunctioning submersible. With time and oxygen running out, the elder man must find a way to manipulate the technology available to him to thwart the unforgiving waters. Although writer/director Alex Parkinson keeps a firm grip on the nuts and bolts of the rescue operation, offering up genuine thrills along the way, the film's adherence to the real events (covered in a 2019 documentary of the same title, also directed by Parkinson) tends to cause the narrative to drag in places. Harrelson makes for a more than capable old-school hero, cut from the same cloth as Ed Harris in Apollo 13, but there's not much flesh on the bones of the other characters. It's a perfectly functional way to spend 90-odd minutes, albeit without getting under the surface of the human terror that should be at the heart of proceedings.
