A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A triumph of conception and design that's slightly betrayed by its execution, this is, nevertheless, a dazzlingly audacious attempt to realise Jean Ray's fantasy novel, in which the deities of Mount Olympus eke out a woeful bourgeois existence inside a labyrinthine mansion. Daughters of Darkness director Harry Kümel cleverly uses the fabulous Gothic sets to generate a real sense of earthbound ethereality, which is reinforced by cinematographer Gerry Fisher's confident use of texture and colour. But, while Orson Welles and Charles Janssens invest their roles with knowing humour, Mathieu Carrière's sailor and Susan Hampshire's Gorgon are markedly less successful. All in all, a glorious curio.
